Steel railway bridges with open supporting structures are bridges designed very economically by engineers in times of scarce resources. These structures were and are optimised in terms of cost and benefit, and thus are very functional structures which have ensured reliable use by the railway over many decades.
SEKISUI Chemical Company Ltd. has further refined Calmmoon Rail specifically for the challenge of noise radiation on open railway bridges built of steel. Calmmoon Rail sheathes the rail at both sides of the rail web and at the rail underside. This provides optimum cover for the noise radiating surfaces and a maximum reduction of the noise level generated by the rails.
Calmmoon Rail is manufactured in the works for the respective rail profile and sleeper spacing and then delivered to the work site.
The elements of Calmmoon Rail can be installed quickly and easily during normal operation of the railway. The lines of the infrastructure operator can be used completely undisturbed during fitting or removing Calmmoon Rail.
In practical use, Calmmoon Rail can be easily and neatly adapted to any bridge conditions, including different sleeper spacing in the transition area, cable guides on the rail and many other features. Calmmoon Rail can be adapted quickly to the given situation on site, using conventional tools.
If railway operators want to be able to see bore holes in the rail web at any time, Calmmoon Rail can easily be adjusted in such an area with the use of standard tools and so meet the requirements of the infrastructure operator.
If welds are required on a rail fitted with Calmmoon Rail, the Calmmoon Rail elements must be removed in the rail compartment where the weld, e.g. an electrothermal weld, is required, as well as in the two adjacent sleeper cribs. After the rails have cooled down to below 80°C, the previously removed Calmmoon Rail elements can be refitted. New self-locking screw-nuts must be used though to guarantee a permanently secure mounting.
Cables routed in the vicinity of the rail foot remain fully functional after Calmmoon Rail is installed. They now have extra protection against unintended actions during maintenance work.
Moreover, Calmmoon Rail provides additional protection for these installations and thus prevents damage to them.
